Before your first adventure

A few things
worth knowing.

Who are the Lightning Bolts?

We’re dads and sons who make time for adventure together. Our crew brings together boys in kindergarten through fifth grade and their dads, with local events and bigger trips around California. We’re 100% volunteer, dad-run.

Do I need to be an experienced camper?

No. Many dads join without camping experience. Each trip is different: some have cabins, while O’Neill is a tent campout. The event guide explains sleeping arrangements, meals, what to bring, and what to expect before you leave home.

What if we can’t make every event?

Nothing is mandatory. Come to the adventures that work for your family. Many dads attend a mix of local events and one or two bigger campouts, rather than every event on the calendar.

What do annual dues cover?

Dues support the crew’s activities and the gear included with membership. Some trips have additional costs: Mammoth is a separate, a la carte trip, and BoltChella may have an additional charge. Review the event details and ask the crew about any costs before enrolling.

What is expected of dads?

Pitch in. Help with meals, set up a tent, lead a hike, grab ice, or leave the campsite cleaner than we found it. Volunteer dads plan the adventures; the whole crew helps make them happen.

What is expected of the boys?

Kindness, inclusiveness, and respect. We do not tolerate bullying, aggressive behavior, playing with fire, or destruction. The boys can have big adventures while learning to care for each other and make good decisions.
